End consumer engagement is rising in importance when energy efficiency is being discussed. On many European markets, energy regulators have brought requirements to their national mandates or specifications for smart metering to enable informed consumers to make qualified energy usage decisions. Awareness of energy consumption is the first step to be taken, but in the IoT (Internet of Things) world, the use of smart energy information can go far beyond that.
Compared to previous PLC technologies, G3-PLC provides more capabilities to collect meter data faster, with fewer errors, and in a more secure way. But that is not the only reason to rely on G3 in powerline communications. It enables handling of extended data volumes in urban areas, improves the performance of use cases and adds supply reliability.
Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) has surpassed ten million advanced meters and devices installed and communicating on the world's largest IoT (Internet of Things) utility network. In doing so, this complex project has now reached a breadth and deployment pace which is unparalleled in the utility industry.
One of the leading energy companies in Finland, Helen was the first to install the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordics. Toshiba’s megawatt-scale BESS is used for improving network stability through control of frequency and voltage fluctuations in the grid.
One of the world’s largest energy providers has renewed their trust in Landis+Gyr: Spanish market leader IBERDROLA has signed an order for the supply of more than 700,000 smart meters, after Landis+Gyr has already been chosen to provide a total of 1.5 million devices over the past six years. The newly ordered smart meters are of the latest generation and will be installed within the scope of the final phase of the STAR mass rollout, starting in 2017. By December 2018, IBERDROLA aims to equip all of its domestic electricity customers with smart meters, as required by Spanish regulations.
An increasing number of energy customers in Burgenland will be able to save on energy costs in the future. Following the installation of 20,000 smart meters, Netz Burgenland is taking consistent positive stock and is set to deploy smart meters throughout its entire operating area. By the end of 2019, 180,000 additional devices will follow to satisfy the regulatory requirements in due time.
