By its very nature, smart metering technology contributes to a more sustainable future. It enables utilities and consumers to make informed decisions about energy usage, improve their energy efficiency and encourages to responsible resource consumption. Smart Metering systems are an essential component of global efforts to upgrade energy distribution systems and master the transition to an increasingly decentralized grid architecture. They build the foundation for innovative energy management solutions, paving the way to a sustainable energy future.
In 2015, Landis+Gyr supplied its smart grid solution comprised of S760 Smart Grid Device Integrator and SmartCom RTU to AEW, a DSO and electricity supplier for the area of Aargau. AEW was looking to maintain grid stability through the management of power generation of PV in the grid and to increase network visualization through the monitoring of transformer stations.
Advances in micro-generation of renewables, storage technologies, ICT, IoT, and, not least, shifting DSO and end-user capabilities are changing expectations in the smart metering industry. To meet these and future market challenges Landis+Gyr extends its smart meter portfolio with a new residential electricity meter, the E360. This innovative device represents a completely new approach to smart meter technology and is specifically designed to accommodate more mature smart metering markets.
Landis+Gyr commits to high standards in environmental awareness and business ethics across its operations, products and services. The ‘Fair Meter’ initiative of a major customer project in the Netherlands demonstrates the company’s contribution to developing and delivering market leading, environmentally and socially conscious technologies and products.
In this round table, we look at what to expect from distribution system operators in the “new energy market.” More specifically, we will discuss market redesign necessitated by rapidly proliferating renewables, changing energy policies, regulation, digitalization and their impact on the existing energy business and technological environment. At the outset, we acknowledge that there are obvious differences among European countries in the number, size and activity profile of DSOs, as well as in the technical characteristics of distribution systems and the challenges facing each network operator. This means that there is no hard and fast model for the role of the DSO and this conversation is intended to cover broad themes rather than the specifics of a particular market.
For decades Germany has played a pioneering role in transforming the way energy is generated, distributed and consumed in Central Europe. Thus it should come as no surprise that a major utility company in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is leading the trend to increased digitization in the energy market.
