Towards a Connected Future

As the market and technologies evolve, the role of communications in smart metering is also changing.

The IoT World

Traditionally, we’ve discussed about the two-way data transmission between the meters and the system. Today, the requirements for connectivity increase, and the smart networks are evolving to all-purpose communication networks.

We’re getting to an IoT world, where communications do not only take place between the smart meter and the billing system, but where multiple systems and devices are interconnected. This development sets further requirements for standardization, bandwidth and flexibility in communications – as well as for data security and privacy.

Landis+Gyr is gradually improving its Gridstream solution for ‘a connected future’. In practice, this means introducing communication technologies with higher bandwidth and reliability, lower latency and allowing IPv6 addressing for increased flexibility. We’ve introduced G3 PLC communications and bring RF mesh to the European market. Our new generation modular E360 smart meter is being developed as our ‘IoT device’, which introduces a groundbreaking communication solution in a smart meter and changes the role of the meter in the communication network on the field. The Consumer Information Interface (CII) developed for Landis+Gyr smart meters enables connectivity and availability of smart metering data for in-home applications and home automation tools. At the same time, we are working on a new modular and open software platform which will enable a new level of connectivity on system level without compromising security and privacy.

Optimal communications for customer needs

The media used for communication in a smart metering solution has a significant effect on the Total Cost of Ownership. There are several factors affecting the selection of communication technology.

  • Use cases (what smart metering is used for; only Meter to Cash or smart grid)
  • Geographical environment (city/rural)
  • TCO requirements (Total Cost of Ownership, CAPEX and OPEX)
  • SLA requirements (Service Level Agreement - what is the requirement for target quality level)
  • Customer type (if they're a DNO or/and service provider)
  • Customer's roll-out scenario (if the meter installations are done in a short time frame, at once, or gradually over a longer period)

In order to achieve a reliable communication network and to fulfil the demanded SLA’s at the lowest TCO, it is essential to understand the foundation and decide for an optimal solution.
